How do I calculate shipping cost by volume rather than weight or price?

Question

Instead of calculating the cost of shipping by weight or product value we would like to calculate the shipping charge/freight charge by volume as this would be the worst case senario for us. How should I go about doing this?

Answer

The option to calculate shipping by volume is really the same as by weight. Whereas price is displayed on the site, the weight is not, apart from the shipping rates page. Therefore you could just change the wording and store the volume of the item in cubic metres. If you change the weight unit in the config settings and the language string values for the shipping rates page, you will have a system that uses volume rather than weight to calculate shipping.

Essentially, the 'weight' value can be used as an arbitrary value for the purposes of calculating shipping.
