Question

What information will I need to provide for a secure certificate application for use on Cactusoft hosting?

Answer

THAWTE will require the following information, so it helps if you can prepare this in advance in a text format to avoid delays in the application process.

1. Domain Name SSL Certificate is Required for.

2. Company Operating this web site (as per WHOIS for the domain record - MUST MATCH).

3. Legal Status of the Company (ie Limited Co., Sole Trader etc.).

4. County where company is located (if Limited this must be the County of the Registered Office).

5. City where company is located (if Limited this must be the City of the Registered Office).

6. Name of senior officer of the Company. This person will sign the authorisation to use the certificate.

7. Job Title of the person named above.

8. Address of the person named above.

9. Email Address of person named above.

10. Telephone Number of the person named above.

11. If the applicant is not the registered owner of the domain we will require written authority from the registered owner that the applicant is entitled to use the domain name.

12. If the web site operator is not a Limited Company, official company documentation.

Essentially the process of issuing a secure certificate involves the 'trusted authority' (in this case THAWTE). Virtually all browsers trust certificates digitally signed by them. They do this on the basis that they trust THAWTE to verify the site owner's information so the customer can be confident the web site is who it says it is. This is the reason for the above questions. THAWTE will verify all the information.
