Question

When an order is placed, the sent flag is automatically set to 'SENT'. Why is this happening?

Answer

This is a difference in v4/v5 to the way v3 works. The 'sent' field now signifies that an order has been successfully sent from the shop to the store owner rather than the goods dispatched to the customer. The comments field is used as the sole way of indicating order process.

The WorldPay payment system sets the sent field only once the order has been approved by WorldPay. For email orders, it is sent once the order has been made and the emails have been sent to the store owner.
